Should WordPress be used for e-commerce websites?

May 1, 2018

The e-commerce market has been growing rapidly for years and will continue to grow in the future.

E-commerce is therefore a business on which one can continue to concentrate in the future.

Which e-commerce software is most frequently used?

The graphic clearly illustrates which e-commerce software solutions are most frequently used worldwide.

WooCommerce with a share of 33%, followed by Magento with 17%, OpenCart with 11% and Shopify with 8%, just to pick out the most used shop software providers.

Why WooCommerce is so popular

What makes WooCommerce so special that almost every third online shop uses this shop solution?

The cause is simply due to WordPress. One in four websites worldwide is now based on the WordPress content management system.

Therefore it is quite obvious why WooCommerce is so often used as an e-commerce solution.

WooCommerce offers great and powerful features that are easy for everyone to manage and free.

But let's take a closer look at the advantages and disadvantages.

Pros of WooCommerce

  • WooCommerce is free.
  • No limitations when adding or managing products and product attributes.
  • Works on all devices.
  • It is open source and offers a variety of customization options.
  • User-friendly and intuitive user interface that does not require any programming skills.
  • Blogs or websites can be expanded with an online shop with just a few clicks. Both can then be managed from the same interface.

There are certainly more advantages, so we have mainly listed the most important ones here.

Cons of WooCommerce

  • A hosting provider is required.
  • Since WooCommerce is a plugin, it only works with WordPress.
  • Extensions for WooCommerce are usually subject to a fee. However, this is also the case with other e-commerce solutions.

The disadvantages are indeed relatively straightforward. This is not least because WooCommerce is open source and free.

WordPress and WooCommerce have many pros

WordPress is without exaggeration the most popular content management system and has a lot ahead of its competitors Joomla and Drupal.

Even though WordPress was in the early years to be classified only as a blogging platform, the software developed in recent years as a real weapon to create and manage even complex websites including online shop.

The other e-commerce solutions like Magento, Shopify or OpenCart are pure e-commerce solutions and do not offer the user any more.

From any blog, website, company site or forum created with WordPress, an online shop can be integrated at any time.

In addition, the user has access to an almost immeasurable number of themes and plugins. These can be either free of charge or subject to a charge.

In contrast to Magento, which is intended for professionals and has a more difficult and complex user interface, WordPress is really simple and friendly.

For a large company operating on an international level, however, Magento should be chosen because this e-commerce solution is designed to process large volumes of content and supports many complex processes.

Conclusion

Every e-commerce software, in direct comparison with WooCommerce, is certainly a little better in itself.

But with WordPress as OpenSource CMS in the back, no other solution can keep up.

It offers complete and unrestricted control over the website, as well as countless free and chargeable additional services.

Also offers an intuitive user interface for beginners and development opportunities for professionals.
